Russia-Ukraine Front Line: Strike Exchange and Contested Donetsk Sectors

Med
BOTTOM LINE

Russian attacks on Kyiv, Odesa and Zaporizhzhia and Ukrainian drone strikes inside Russia have intensified the strike exchange this week. The front remains contested around northern Donetsk, Lyman and the Kramatorsk-Sloviansk approach. A decisive breakthrough is unlikely over the next 1-3 months, but confidence in that judgement is low because battlefield reporting conflicts.

KEY JUDGMENTS
  • Russian forces are very likely to continue drone and ballistic-missile strikes against Kyiv, Odesa and Zaporizhzhia over the next 1-3 months. Russian forces launched 163 drones across Ukraine on 26 August, Ukrainian air defences reported shooting down 132, and the remaining drones struck 18 locations. On 27 August, journalists reported at least six explosions in Kyiv, while officials reported damage in Odesa and injuries to at least seven people, including three children, in Zaporizhzhia. UN and major-media reporting that Russian strikes killed more than 30 people in and around Kyiv over several days corroborates the continuing civilian risk, although incident-level casualty totals differ. (high)
  • Ukraine is likely to continue long-range drone strikes inside Russia over the next 1-3 months, with Russian oil infrastructure among the targets. Current reporting identifies Ukrainian attacks inside Russian territory, a focus on Russia's oil sector and supplies to Crimea, and strikes on the Novokuibyshevsk refinery and another oil refinery in the Samara region. A Ukrainian drone attack in Krasnodar reportedly killed three people, including two children. Russia's air defences claimed to have intercepted and destroyed 726 Ukrainian drones on 20 August, but the scale of that claim, the damage caused and the effect on Russian fuel availability are not independently established. Confidence is medium because the continuation pattern is better supported than the operational effect. (medium)
  • A decisive operational breakthrough by either side is unlikely over the next 1-3 months, while further local gains by Russian or Ukrainian forces have a roughly even chance. Russian troops are reported pushing along the Lyman and Sloviansk axes, advancing in Donetsk, controlling two towns and holding a significant part of Konstantynivka. Ukrainian forces are reported conducting counter-attacks towards Lyman, and the 3rd Army Corps is reported close to cutting a Russian salient and the Russian 20th Army bridgehead on the Zherebets river. Ukrainian forces are still reported able to supply positions near Kramatorsk. The front line is increasingly difficult to determine. This is a low-confidence assessment based on conflicting major-media, official and social-media reporting, including contradictory accounts of Russian gains and Ukrainian tactical successes. (low)
  • Ukraine is likely to face sustained humanitarian and export pressure over the next 1-3 months. The UN estimates that 10.8 million Ukrainians need humanitarian assistance, and July 2026 was the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians since April 2022. Russian attacks have reportedly blocked Ukraine's Black Sea ports, which handled 90 per cent of grain exports, while Ukraine exported 539,000 tonnes of grain from 1 to 21 August compared with 1.73 million tonnes in the same period a year earlier. Frequent air-raid alerts suspend port operations, and almost half of petrol stations in Ukrainian-controlled areas of Kherson region have reportedly stopped working. Confidence is medium because the humanitarian trend is well supported, but current export and fuel effects rely partly on incomplete or single-source reporting. (medium)

BLUF

Russian attacks on Kyiv, Odesa and Zaporizhzhia and Ukrainian drone strikes inside Russia have intensified the strike exchange this week. The front remains contested around northern Donetsk, Lyman and the Kramatorsk-Sloviansk approach. A decisive breakthrough is unlikely over the next 1-3 months, but confidence in that judgement is low because battlefield reporting conflicts.

Executive summary

Russian forces launched 163 drones across Ukraine on 26 August, while Ukrainian air defences reported destroying 132 and the remainder striking 18 locations. On 27 August, explosions were reported in Kyiv, Odesa and Zaporizhzhia, with civilian casualties and damage to residential, educational and infrastructure sites. Russian strikes reportedly killed more than 30 people in and around Kyiv over several days. Ukraine continues long-range drone attacks inside Russia, including against oil infrastructure, while reporting remains divided over territorial changes in northern Donetsk. Russian advances towards Konstantynivka and the Kramatorsk-Sloviansk approach compete with reports of Ukrainian counter-attacks and a threatened Russian salient near the Zherebets river.

Change from previous assessment

Since the 26 August prior brief, the assessment has gained stronger evidence of continued Russian attacks through the 26 August 163-drone barrage and the 27 August incidents in Kyiv, Odesa and Zaporizhzhia. The Ukrainian deep-strike judgement is retained, with current reporting giving greater specificity on oil infrastructure in the Samara region and casualties in Krasnodar. The front-line judgement remains low confidence, but the new reporting adds competing claims involving the Ukrainian 3rd Army Corps, the Russian 20th Army bridgehead, Konstantynivka and the Kramatorsk approach. No new reporting in this run materially changes the prior assessments on ballistic-missile defence or Russian willingness to enter meaningful negotiations.

Key judgments

  1. Russian forces are very likely to continue drone and ballistic-missile strikes against Kyiv, Odesa and Zaporizhzhia over the next 1-3 months. (Confidence: high · ASSESSED)
  • I&W: Confirms if Russian forces launch another combined drone or ballistic-missile attack that produces reported impacts in Kyiv, Odesa or Zaporizhzhia. (0-14 days)
  • I&W: Breaks if no confirmed Russian drone or missile strike is reported in Kyiv, Odesa or Zaporizhzhia for 30 consecutive days. (0-30 days)
  1. Ukraine is likely to continue long-range drone strikes inside Russia over the next 1-3 months, with Russian oil infrastructure among the targets. (Confidence: medium · ASSESSED)
  • I&W: Confirms if independent imagery or Russian local-authority reporting records fire, damage or an outage at Novokuibyshevsk, another Samara refinery or a Russian oil facility after a Ukrainian drone attack. (0-30 days)
  • I&W: Breaks if no further Ukrainian strike is credibly reported inside Russia for 30 days. (0-30 days)
  1. A decisive operational breakthrough by either side is unlikely over the next 1-3 months, while further local gains by Russian or Ukrainian forces have a roughly even chance. Russian troops are reported pushing along the Lyman and Sloviansk axes, advancing in Donetsk, controlling two towns and holding a significant part of Konstantynivka. This is a low-confidence assessment based on conflicting major-media, official and social-media reporting, including contradictory accounts of Russian gains and Ukrainian tactical successes. (Confidence: low · ASSESSED)
  • I&W: Confirms if independent geolocated reporting shows continued fighting around Lyman, Kolodiazi, the Zherebets bridgehead and Konstantynivka without confirmed entry into Kramatorsk or Sloviansk or a durable operational encirclement. (0-30 days)
  • I&W: Breaks if Russian forces establish sustained positions inside Kramatorsk or Sloviansk, or if Ukrainian forces cut and hold the Russian salient and eliminate the Russian 20th Army bridgehead. (1-3 months)

Confidence is medium because the humanitarian trend is well supported, but current export and fuel effects rely partly on incomplete or single-source reporting. (Confidence: medium · ASSESSED)
  • I&W: Confirms if Ukraine's grain exports remain below 1.73 million tonnes in a comparable 21-day period and Ukrainian port operators report repeated suspensions caused by air-raid alerts. (0-30 days)
  • I&W: Breaks if grain exports reach or exceed 1.73 million tonnes in a comparable 21-day period and port operations continue without an air-raid suspension for 14 consecutive days. (1-3 months)

Outlook & scenarios

Sustained strike exchange and contested front (60%)

Russian forces continue drone and ballistic attacks on Kyiv, Odesa and Zaporizhzhia, while Ukraine continues deep drone attacks inside Russia, including against oil infrastructure in the Samara region. Fighting remains around Lyman, Kolodiazi, the Zherebets river, Konstantynivka and the Kramatorsk approach. Civilian harm and grain disruption persist without a decisive territorial shift.

Russian local advance in northern Donetsk (25%)

Russian troops consolidate reported gains in Konstantynivka and press towards Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. Ukrainian forces retain some ability to supply positions near Kramatorsk and conduct counter-attacks towards Lyman, limiting the speed of the advance without reversing the broader pressure.

Ukrainian tactical success against the Russian salient (20%)

The Ukrainian 3rd Army Corps cuts the Russian salient and eliminates or forces the withdrawal of the Russian 20th Army bridgehead on the western bank of the Zherebets river. Ukrainian counter-attacks in the Lyman direction expand, while Russian long-range strikes against Ukrainian cities continue.

Rapid eastern-front rupture (10%)

Low-probability, high-impact outcome: Russian forces exploit the reported pressure on the eastern bank of the Oskil near Kupiansk and the reported 8.5 kilometre distance from Kramatorsk to establish sustained positions towards Kramatorsk and Sloviansk within one month. This would invalidate the no-breakthrough assessment and sharply increase pressure on Ukrainian logistics and civilian movement.

Recommendations

  1. Maintain a 0-14 day incident ledger for Kyiv, Odesa and Zaporizhzhia. Record weapon type, launch volume, reported interceptions, impact locations, infrastructure damage and casualty revisions. Reconcile duplicate reports before updating the civilian-impact assessment.
  2. Prioritise geolocated imagery and unit-level reporting on the Ukrainian 3rd Army Corps, the Russian 20th Army bridgehead, Lyman, Kolodiazi, the Zherebets river, Konstantynivka, Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. Do not change control-line maps on the basis of a single official or social-media claim.
  3. Separate three questions in collection on Ukrainian strikes inside Russia: whether an attack occurred, whether it damaged the Novokuibyshevsk or another Samara refinery, and whether the damage affected output or fuel availability. Treat Russian air-defence interception totals as claims until independently corroborated.
  4. Track Ukrainian grain export tonnage, Danube and Black Sea port operating hours, air-raid-related suspensions and petrol-station availability in Kherson region. Use the 539,000-tonne and 1.73-million-tonne figures as comparison points for the next reporting cycle.
  5. Retain a low-confidence warning line for a Russian move towards Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. Raise collection priority if reporting shows loss of Ukrainian supply access near Kramatorsk, sustained Russian positions inside either city or the collapse of the Russian salient near the Zherebets river.

Confidence & uncertainty

Overall confidence is medium. Current strike reporting is corroborated by UN, wire-service, major-media and local-authority reporting, including reporting on attacks in Kyiv, Odesa and Zaporizhzhia. Confidence is lower on territorial control and operational effects because Russian and Ukrainian battlefield accounts conflict, the front line is difficult to map, and several assessments rely on single-source or social-media reporting. Some records also carry stale 2023 dates or no date, limiting temporal precision.
