Two powerful earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck northern Venezuela in late June, causing mass casualties across multiple states and severe damage. Credible tallies range from more than 900 deaths to at least 1,430, with tens of thousands reported missing and thousands injured. The United Nations says 8.6 million people experienced moderate to severe shaking and estimates direct physical damage at 6.7 billion dollars. Rescue work is ongoing and 172 people were still believed trapped.
The response is large but controlled. The UN has 39 search and rescue teams in country and more than 2,000 foreign responders are deployed. The United States has pledged assistance, deployed warships and transport planes, and is coordinating with Caracas as part of a broader security and economic thaw. Activists and aid groups say relief is being filtered through government permits and that officials have been reluctant to accept private assistance. With thousands homeless and access restricted, the crisis is likely to run for months.
